Medtronic Chair of Surgical Training and Research at Universitat Jaume I closes a first year of intense activity with the participation of about three hundred people in the seven training activities managed by FUE (Universitat Jaume I-Enterprise Foundation).

Created in July 2016, the Chair emerged from the will of the teaching staff at UJI the Pre-departmental Unit of Medicine, and the interest of the company Medtronic to promote research and teaching in the field of surgery in collaboration with the General University Hospital of Castellón.

The first edition of the Master’s Degree in Gynecologic Oncology has counted with four students from January to June of this academic year. This program combines theoretical insights with important periods of hospital practice tutored by high level professionals from the Multidisciplinary Unit of Abdominopelvic Oncological Surgery (UMCOAP) in the General University Hospital of Castellón.

At the same time, the Medtronic Chair has organized several courses on gynecologic oncology and urological and abdominopelvic oncology; as well as a workshop on urological oncology with the participation of over 200 professionals who could watch from the ‘Paranimf’ Hall live broadcasts of a surgical operation taking place at the operating rooms of the General University Hospital of Castellón.

The Chair follow-up committee includes Miguel Cano and Maite Sanz, as members representing the company Medtronic; the professor Miguel Ángel Moliner (UJI vice-rector) and the doctor Antoni Llueca (director of the chair) representing the Universitat Jaume I. The committee had a meeting on Monday 17th July to assess the activities carried out during this first year and prepare the activities for the next academic year, including a new course on surgical nursing in patients with carcinomatosis, which will increase the courses offered.

Medtronic Chair of Training and Surgical Research fosters surgical training for professionals involved in surgery through courses, scientific conferences, workshops and meetings. The Chair works on the development of new surgical techniques and the investigation of new materials and instrumentation in the field of surgery, it also promotes surgical training for undergrad and postgrad university students.
